At the Table

The other day
I saw a woman, hungry, impatient,
Who, sitting at the table,
Peeled a grapefruit like an orange,
And ate of it.
I said, “Is it good, friend?”
“It is bitter – bitter”, she answered,
“But I eat it
Although it is bitter,
‘Cause the grapefruit spoon’s a pain.”
