I found this beautiful icon of Jesus and Mary at the thrift shop. At home I noticed something unusual – a third adult hand. Jesus has two, Mary has two, and there’s another hand toward the bottom.
It’s a copy of The Icon of the Three Hands. The third hand is St. John Damascene‘s. The Caliph cut off John’s hand. John prayed before an icon of Mary and Jesus, asking for healing. He fell asleep, and awoke with his hand restored. In gratitude, he added a silver hand to the icon. Thus icons of the Theotokos Triherusa: the Mother of God, three hands.
