Cleopatra, 1963

Starring Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra, Richard Burton as Marc Antony, and Rex Harrison as Julius Caesar, Cleopatra is visually spectacular. The actors, especially Rex Harrison, are very good. Elizabeth Taylor looks and acts her part as Queen of Egypt. The actors are better than the writing. At four hours, the movie is two hours too long.

The first half, dominated not by Cleopatra but by Julius Caesar, is a good movie. They should have called it Caesar and Cleopatra, and stopped after Caesar’s death. The second two hours should have been Antony and Cleopatra, and they should have got different writers for both; George Bernard Shaw and William Shakespeare, maybe.

I’d watch the first half again, but not the second half.
