This is why we shouldn’t send money to Washington “for the poor” – because it’s a lie. It isn’t for the poor; it’s for the Senate. If you want to help the poor, put money in the Salvation Army kettle, or volunteer at the food pantry, or directly help someone you know needs help.
It’s a technocratic fantasy that wise bureaucrats will optimally distribute resources to ensure the greatest good for the greatest number. Taking advantage of that fantasy, politicians tell their self-serving lie: that sending money to rich men in Washington will help poor men in Peoria.
