Where’s the outrage?

In Brussels a man deliberately set fire to a mosque. The imam died trying to put out the fire. The alleged arsonist was arrested.

This is a heinous crime, and I hope justice is done. There have been a few expressions of outrage, pro-forma condemnations, and some small protests, but the reaction seems surprisingly muted given the seriousness of the crime. Why is that, do you suppose?

UPDATE: As I thought might be the case, the BBC reports the suspect under arrest “described himself as a Muslim” and may be a conservative Salafist who hates Shia Muslims.

  1. Seeing as it only happened last night, they’re probably waiting to see who did it and what his motivation was.

Given that before, response has been really quick to point to anti-Muslim bias, I’m guessing that there’s a reason for them to think otherwise.

On that guess, I’d suppose that the guy who entered had an appearance that made those with official knowledge reluctant to speak up.

Based on that guess and supposition, I’d theorize that the guy looked like a Muslim– question being Sunni, or more-extreme-than-the-Imam (may he rest in peace– hope He gives points for personal sacrifices like that, even if the theology is wrong), or the Imam not doing something the arsonist wanted?

    47. Far, far too young.

  2. He wasn’t trying to save the Mosque, he was trying to save a fellow worshiper.

    “Greater love hath no man”….

A Belgian mosque leader was killed last night as he tried to save a worshipper set alight in a brutal petrol bomb attack.
Father-of-four Abdullah Dadou, 46, died from smoke inhalation after a man burst into a Shiite mosque in the Brussels suburb of Anderlecht at 7pm.
Witnesses said the man, who had no ID papers, turned up at the building, pulled out a knife and axe, poured petrol over the floor and then set it alight.
He then shouted Sunni slogans – sparking speculation that the attack was linked to tensions between them and the Shiites.

  3. I think/hope people like that imam are following Jesus, even if they don’t fully realize it. May his soul rest in peace.
