Two inanities

The federal budget

“Democrats are set to adjourn the Senate after three years of not passing a budget and with no plans to avert a fiscal cliff.”

I’d just as soon Congress would adjourn and not come back. If we’ve got by without a budget for two years, we must not need one. As for the fiscal cliff, I predict it won’t be averted, merely ignored. And it might just as well be ignored, because there’s nothing to be done about it that is both politically possible and wise.

On the other hand, if Congress did adjourn forever, then the Congressmen would be around here instead of a thousand miles away. Something to think about.

Jesus’ wife

In other news, journalists think Jesus might have been married because a piece of papyrus the size of a business card quotes Jesus saying “…my wife…”. This obviously trumps the big Book that says Jesus wasn’t married, because that book was written by people who wanted to have a celibate Jesus to imitate. That way they could all not have sex in addition to dying horrible deaths for refusing to renounce the other doctrines they made up. Because Christians are hypocrites and stuff.

  1. I’d just as soon Congress would adjourn and not come back. If we’ve got by without a budget for two years, we must not need one.

I know you’re making a joke, but the reason they haven’t made one is because that way they can keep going on the old one– that “one time only, emergency spending” level is turned into something normal. And they don’t have to put their names on it.

    This is…really, really bad.

As to the second one– the Church is Christ’s bride, that’s been normal since the Early Church. But hey, it might make the folks who published the story money!

  2. Now they’ve set the precedent – of being able to not pass a budget and get away with it – they’ve fixed it so that spending is automatic; it’s not spending that requires an act of Congress. Actually having a budget necessarily has become a political calculation, from now on, whoever is in power.

And yes, it all might just as well be plastic fish as US dollars anyway.
