The Blackleg Miner

A blackleg is a scab or strikebreaker – someone
who crosses the picket line to work during a strike.
It is not clear to me which are the blacklegs, but
this video about the red versus grey squirrel debate is set to Steeleye Span singing:

The Blackleg Miner

It’s in the evening, after dark,
That the blackleg miner creeps to work.
In his moleskin pants and dirty shirt,
There goes the blackleg miner.

Well he grabs his duds and down he goes
To hew the coal that lies below.
There’s not a woman in all the row
Would look at the blackleg miner.

Oh Delaval is a terrible place,
They rub wet clay in the blackleg’s face,
And round the heaps they run a race
To catch the blackleg miner.

So don’t go near the Saghill mine,
For across the way they stretch a line
To catch the throat and break the spine
Of the dirty blackleg miner.

Then they grab his duds and pick as well,
And they toss them down the pit to hell.
Down you go, and fare you well,
You dirty blackleg miner!

So join the union while you may,
Don’t wait until your dying day,
For that may not be far away,
You dirty blackleg miner!
